Altitude Sickness

When you dream of trekking in Nepal, the first images that come to mind are snow-covered peaks, prayer flags, and fresh mountain air. But along with the beauty of the Himalaya, something comes that every trekker should know – altitude sickness.

At Sherpa Discovery Treks, we believe consciousness is the best way to stay safe and enjoy your adventure. So let’s explain a few things related to altitude sickness.

What is altitude sickness?

Altitude Sickness happens when you climb mountains and your body doesn’t have enough time to adjust to the air. The higher you are, the less oxygen there will be in the air. For example:

  • At sea level, oxygen is 100%.
  • At 3,000 meters, oxygen is about 70%.
  • Above 5,000 meters, oxygen is about 50%.

Your body needs oxygen to function properly. When there is less, you can feel dizzy, tired, or have a headache. This is altitude sickness.

Common symptoms

Altitude Sickness does not care if you are young, old, strong, or weak. Anyone can get it. Some common signs include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea (feeling like you might vomit)
  • Tiredness
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dizziness

These symptoms usually appear after you climb above 2,500 meters. They may feel small at first, but they can get worse if ignored.

Types of Altitude Sickness

There are three main levels:

Mild Altitude Sickness

  • Common and not too dangerous.
  • Symptoms: headache, poor sleep, loss of appetite.
  • Usually goes away with rest and acclimatization.

Moderate Altitude Sickness

  • More serious.
  • Symptoms: severe headache, nausea, and shortness of breath.
  • Walking feels harder than normal.

Severe Altitude Sickness

  • This is life-threatening.
  • Symptoms: confusion, difficulty walking straight, coughing up pink fluid, and extreme breathlessness.
  • Needs immediate medical attention and descent to a lower altitude.

How to Prevent Altitude Sickness?

Good news: Altitude Sickness is preventable. Here are the Golden Rules Sherpa Discovery Treks following:

  • Close slowly – Don’t run to the top. The body needs time to adjust.
  • Days of acclimatization – Do days of rest during your walk to let your body adapt.
  • Drink plenty of water – Keep hydrated, but avoid too much alcohol or caffeine.
  • Eat healthy foods – Hot and nutritious meals keep their energy high.
  • Listen to your body – Do not ignore headaches or dizziness. Rest if you need to.
  • Use the medication, if necessary – some trekkers use drugs like Diamox, but always consult a doctor first.

At Sherpa Discovery Treks, our guides are trained to recognize the symptoms earlier. If you feel bad:
