Trip Overview of Gosaikunda Lake Trek – 7 Day

The Gosaikunda Lake Trek is one of Nepal’s best short hiking journeys. It rewards visitors with awe-inspiring natural wonders at every step along the trail in the Langtang region. You will have a once-in-a-lifetime, unique opportunity to walk into one of Nepal’s sacred Hindu destinations, where you can have a spiritual experience and enjoy stunning, wonderful nature at the same time.

Gosaikunda Lake is often called the “Frozen Lake” because it freezes during the winter months from December to February due to its elevation at 4380 meters above sea level. Similarly, this place is crowded in August primarily because of the Janai Purnima festival. A multitude of Buddhist and Hindu pilgrims trek here to this holy lake to take a holy dip in its water to bring spiritual purification and cleanse sins.

Apart from Janai Purnima, this Short Gosaikunda Lake Trek is mostly visited in autumn and spring due to the favorable climate and clear skies, which allow an unobstructed view of incredible landscapes. This time of the year in the Langtang region offers the dramatic scenery of the ice-blanketed majestic peaks, making the journey even more pleasurable.

This 7-day Gosaikunda Lake Trek itinerary launches with a picturesque drive to Dhunche from Kathmandu City. Dhunche will start and end this seven-day journey in the Langtang region. You will trek through the route of verdant forest, open green meadows, peaceful valleys, and small scattered villages with mountain views in the backdrop.

Before reaching Gosaikunda, you will pass through Chandanbari Village, also known as Sing Gompa, a famous stop on the Short Gosaikunda Lake Trek adventure. Here, you can see the traditional yak cheese factory and sample fresh yak cheese. From here, the trail will lead straight to Gosaikunda Lake, the culmination points of this journey.

Along the way, you will encounter a series of other alpine lakes, such as Ragat (Blood) Kunda, Dudh (Milk) Kunda, Saraswati Kunda, Bhairav Kunda, and so on, each of which has its own religious and spiritual importance. On this journey, Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Yala Peak, the Ganesh Himal range, and many others are visible, and they are truly jaw-dropping to watch.

On this journey, you will encounter not only the beautiful landscapes of the Langtang region but also ethnic groups like the Tamang, who will welcome you wholeheartedly and show you their rich culture and way of life in this remote place. This trip is a proper balance of adventure and tranquility, perfect for a quieter experience and for beginners.

So, put this journey on your travel list for this year and have the best time of your life in the Langtang region. It doesn’t matter that you have limited time; this trek is ideal for the Himalayan experience in just one week. Therefore, please reserve your place with us for a personalized and secure travel experience.

Trip Information

Best Time

This short Gosaikunda Lake Trek is best done in autumn and spring. These seasons offer clear skies and blooming landscapes, and the trails are in the best condition at this time of year. However, the trails are also well-packed with many trekkers from all around the world. The following are the seasons you can choose from, as per your preference, which are briefly explained below:

Spring: Spring is the most favorable season to travel on the Gosaikunda Lake Trek. From March to May, the temperature fluctuates from 15°C to 25°C offering delightful experience. In spring, the hills and forests burst into color with blossoms of rhododendrons, orchids, gentians, primroses, maples, and other vibrant wildflowers.

Similarly, the trails will be very lively, filled with friendly hikers. Walking with other fellow trekkers will be a one-of-a-kind experience that you will never forget. The scenery you will see during trekking will be awe-inspiring and enjoyable. We recommend visiting Nepal during this season to embark on the Gosaikunda Lake Trek.

Autumn: Autumn, or fall, is another favorable season for the short Gosaikunda Lake Trek package. From September to November, the temperature fluctuates between 15°C and 25°C, offering clear blue skies and sunny days. Mountains like Langtang Lirung, Langtang Ri, Ganesh Himal, and others will be very jaw-dropping, providing unforgettable scenery.

Moreover, grand festivals in Nepal like Deepawali (Tihar) and Vijaya Dashami (Dashain) fall during this season. You can see the lively environment at the teahouses celebrating festivals and enjoying time with their family members. You can be part of that and have happy moments, making this trip even more worth it.

Winter: Winter is not as favorable a season as spring and autumn due to severe mountain cold temperatures. However, one benefit of traveling this season is that you will have the opportunity to have a tranquil hiking experience. Gosaikunda Lake will be frozen during this time of the year, providing a surreal, almost spiritual experience.

Summer or Monsoon: We do not suggest embarking on the Gosaikunda Lake trek journey during the monsoon, as heavy rainfall can cause floods and landslides in many parts of Nepal. The trail can also become hazardous due to slippery surfaces, increasing the risk of accidents.

Elevation and distance

On this Langtang Gosainkunda trekking journey, your adventure starts from Dhunche, which is situated at an elevation of 1960 meters. From here, you will hike to Chandanbari or Sing Gompa, lying at an altitude of 3330 meters above sea level. Gosaikunda Lake, at 4380 meters, is the highest destination you will reach on this 7-day trip.

In the same way, the total walking distance you will cover in these 3 days is 31 km, or 19.3 miles. From Dhunche, you will walk about 16 kilometers to Gosaikunda Lake, passing through Sing Gompa. Similarly, you will walk 15 kilometers to Dhunche from Gosainkunda on the return journey.

Difficulty and altitude sickness

This journey is relatively easy compared to other hiking trips in the Everest and Annapurna regions. The paths are typically gentle with a slight level of inclination. Only certain parts get steeper and more challenging when reaching the Gosaikunda Lake. This journey requires you to walk about 5 to 6 hours per day.

Basic fitness will be preferable for this trek, as it involves navigating steep sections and walking long hours. This excursion will take you above 3000 meters when you trek to Gosaikunda Lake at 4380 meters above sea level. So, there is a probability of getting acute mountain sickness.

Although altitude sickness is not usually life-threatening, it can become serious if not treated promptly. If you get altitude sickness, you will see the typical symptoms like loss of appetite, fatigue, headaches, and dizziness while trekking to higher elevations. You can walk slowly, drink water, eat well, and rest properly to reduce this risk.

Maximum and minimum walk per day

On this 7-day Gosainkunda Lake Trek itinerary adventure, you will hike just three days out of seven. As this is a short journey with a moderate difficulty level, you will walk for around 6 hours on a standard basis. On day 3 of the itinerary, the minimum walk per day would be about 5 hours, depending on your trekking speed, during which you travel to Chandanbari from Dhunche.

In the same way, the maximum walk per day would be on day 5, taking about 7 to 8 hours, during which you travel back to Dhunche from Gosaikunda. So, due to this, you should be in good shape to travel without any physical pain and without too much exhaustion while trekking.

Accommodation, Food and Drink

On this 7-day excursion, we will provide accommodation at a 3-star hotel where you can enjoy comfortable facilities like internet, room service, AC, laundry service, etc. After reaching Dhunche Bazaar in the Langtang region, you will stay in a cozy hillside teahouse or lodge to experience an amiable setting.

The rooms in these cozy teahouses are mostly neat and sanitized, and they provide basic amenities like a warm blanket, a bedsheet, and a soft cushion. However, services are limited upon reaching a higher altitude. Access to the internet and communication services will be very poor.

All things considered, the teahouse serves immensely nourishing Nepali dishes, which will provide the energy required for hiking. Local foods like dal bhat, tarkari, gundruk, aloo tama, thukpa, roti, and momos are available in the teahouses. Our company covers your three meals while hiking in the mountains.

Similarly, some teahouses sell international dishes like pasta, pizza, pancakes, toast with jam, peanut butter, eggs, honey, etc. However, you should avoid drinking any kind of unhealthy drinks except garlic soup, which will work as a remedy for altitude sickness while trekking to Gosaikunda Lake.

Your Extra Expenses

Meals in Kathmandu aren’t included in this Gosaikunda Lake Trek adventure, so you can sample local cafes and restaurants at your will. You must have comprehensive travel and medical insurance to cover emergencies, trip cancellations, and unexpected costs. Porter services and jeep transfers are available for an additional fee. However, having porters with you will ease your load on steep hills, while jeeps provide a smoother ride on bumpy roads.

You must budget for personal expenses such as alcoholic drinks, cold beverages, and laundry.  Road accidents, airplane delays, and landslides may entail additional charges that you must pay.  Remember, tipping your guide after the Gosaikunda Lake Trek is entirely optional and greatly appreciated.

Can a beginner join this trip?

Yes, a beginner can take part in the trek to Gosaikunda Lake. This journey is specifically designed for new trekkers and people who have little time in Nepal but want to have a Himalayan trekking experience. Even people with kids can join this trek and visit the holy Gosaikunda Lake.

Moreover, this journey is safe and secure with 24-hour assistance from a guide if needed. Even solo and female travelers have completed this journey and given positive feedback, which you can see on our official website. So, all you need is a basic fitness level for walking three days continuously in the Langtang region.

Transportation

The package already covers all the road transport during the trek to Gosaikunda Lake. We offer an airstrip pick-up and drop-off facility. On the second day of the trip, we will drive to the local bus station to catch a public bus to Dhunche. While returning from Dhunche, we will again travel by public bus, enjoying the trip with other passengers.

However, if you love a peaceful ride, you can reserve a jeep to Dhunche for a more adventurous experience. Thus, this facility comes with extra money in the package. If you have additional time in Nepal, we can prepare an itinerary for a sightseeing tour in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

 Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is a must, even if you are trekking for three days on a day itinerary on this Langtang Gosaikunda Trekking adventure. In three days, you will reach above 4000 meters in Gosaikunda Lake at 4380 meters above sea level. So, this increases the chance of altitude sickness without acclimatization at any destination.

During this crucial time, travel insurance will cover your expensive medical expenses and swift emergency evacuation. Also, your good travel insurance policy will cover lost and stolen bags and flight delays, which can significantly impact you financially. Having travel insurance is like a shield for you to cover unpredictable expenses, making your journey stress-fr
