Talk to trip expertA Helambu trek in Nepal means an opportunity to discover the less-traveled trails that lead you to that part of the country that has still maintained the untouched charm of nature.
If you dream of some unusual yet very beautiful nature trails not commonly taken by most hikers, then surely you mustn’t miss out on the Helambu trekking journey.
The Helambu region is very near Kathmandu, only 75 km northeast. Its villages are positioned inside the charming Langtang National Park, enclosed by Langtang Valley to the north.
Despite being so close, travelers often overlook the Helambu trek, which doesn’t even need any domestic flights or long road travel in the journey. This is not only a gentle trek but also a very short and rich natural and cultural journey, perfect for those with very short vacation days.
Additionally, with an altitude limited to only 3650 m, the Helambu trek 6 days journey, is a great choice for those who wish to avoid extreme heights in Nepal.
The Helambu trek itinerary will start from Sundarijal, one hour’s drive away from the capital. From here, you hike into the beautiful Helambu region through a forest setting, following the ridges and waterfalls.
On the way, you will get to sleep in the villages of Hyolmos, Sherpas, and Tamangs. Although from the Tibetan lineage, they follow different customs and dialects.
En route will also have the irresistible presence of Dorje Lhakpa (6966 m), Naya Kanga (5844 m), Jugal Himal (6095 m), Numbur (6957 m), Gaurishankar (7134 m), Langtang, and Gangchhenpo (6378 m) throughout your walking route.
The main highlight of the Helambu trek will be your arrival at Thadepati, which is also our maximum location, followed by the hiking trip to Tarke Ghyang.
The big Churi Gompa here is an absolute delight. You will now descend into the Melamchi Bazaar through magnificent forests of rhododendrons, pines, oaks, and firs and return to Kathmandu past beautiful cultural landscapes.
An interesting natural mountain and cultural trip immersing you in Nepal’s unique pleasures, rounds off our Helambu trek. And, do not forget, by taking this trip, you are also supporting the region’s ongoing reconstruction after the 2015 earthquake.
The first day of our Helambu trek will commence with a thrilling one-hour-long bus ride towards the popular picnic town of Sundarijal. After getting out of the bus, we will now prepare to walk along the Helambu path which on the first day will take us to Chisapani.
First, the damp mossy thick forest of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park will take us uphill. After a few moments, we will come across a narrow stone staircase that guides us to Borlang Bhanjyang.
From here, the terraced cultivated land of Mulkharka and Kulkharka will then march us to Chisapani, where Everest, Langtang, Manaslu, and Annapurna seem beautifully sparkling on the horizon.
We will open our eyes fresh before the sun so we can hike up to the Chisapani Viewpoint and see the emerging sun enveloping the high Himalayas.
Then, after a big, good breakfast, we will head towards Kutumsang. Descending along the fields and meadows, we will reach Pati Bhanjyang, a small and charming village.
Then the Sherpa inhabitant of Thankune Bhanjyang will direct us to Chipling. The way from here now constantly climbs a ridge where we will find a chorten typical of Buddhist culture.
Now, through the Golphu Bhanjyang, we will head down for a peaceful night at Kutumsang with the beautiful backdrop of Dorje Lhakpa.
After breakfast at Kutumsang, we will now move ahead to the north through the Langtang National Park and climb rigorously along the forested trail for a while. We will not be able to find any permanent dwelling for the time being.
The path will go on ascending, giving us an outstanding view of the Jugal Himal. The ascending slope will lead us to Mera Danda, which will move us down ahead to Magen Goth, where we can find some Sherpa tea houses.
We will continue further along the rising slope towards Thare Danda, which eventually rests us at Thadepati. Evening will be settled with the eternal companions of Numbur, Jugal, Dorje Lhakpa, and Gaurishankar.
Today, the journey on our Helambu trek will be pretty interesting as we will pass through the villages of various ethnicities and cultures. First, we will move east away from the Thare Pati Bhanjyang and then south to Melamchi Gaon.
In this village, we can see many stupas, monasteries, and a cave of Guru Rinpoche. We will now climb upward towards Tarke Ghyang, where we will discover a big 8th-century-old monastery called Dzoeril Gompa, Churi Gompa, or Tsuti Gompa.
On our Helambu trek itinerary, this is probably the coolest day. We have to tackle some elevation, but it’s not that steep. From Tarke Ghyang, the pathway will take us through a few waterfalls of the Setighyang and Ghangyul villages.
Shortly, Sermathang will come into our view, where, in the clearest weather possible, we can look directly at Gosaikunda Lake, Langtang, and Ganesh Peaks.
Our Helambu trek will conclude beautifully today as we move down to Melamchi Bazaar from Sermathang. On the way, we will traverse the Kakani and Thimbu towns before reaching Melamchi Bazaar.
Again, a bus will be our guide, escorting us along the Araniko Highway. Observing the beauties and people of Dhulikhel, Banepa, and Bhaktapur, we will reach Kathmandu.
We will then drop you off at your location or lodging so you can relax, enjoying the rest of the evening.
Helambu, being very near to Kathmandu, shares similar climatic conditions to Kathmandu. Thus, the trek is available to hug you in any month of spring, winter, or autumn.
The summer months are accompanied by the monsoon rain as well, disrupting the flow of the journey with muddy paths, dark clouds, and thunderstorms.
The most favorable landscape, daytime and nighttime heat, the favorable sun, and the pretty Himalayan views will be available in September, October, and November of the Fall season and March, April, and May of the spring season.
The thick forests will be lined up with bright shades of red with the rhododendrons, while the daytime heat often dances between 15 to 20 degrees Celsius.
Above all, the weather remains calm and offers the clearest possible Himalayan panorama into the horizon.
December, January, and February daytime heat will be very delightful within 6 to 10 degrees Celsius, but the nights can be pretty cold with -15 degrees Celsius. Sometimes, a little snow can be detectable on the pathway to Thadepati.
The Helambu trek is a level 2 hiking trip in Nepal, which hints it is of medium difficulty, with the maximum altitude reaching 3650 m at Thadepati.
This trek does not necessitate engaging in any domestic mountain air transfers and lies very near to Kathmandu Valley within 70 km. Every day, the trail to the overnight villages will be traversed within 4 to 6 hours on average on foot.
The journey initiation point of the trek, Sundarijal, is also very easily and quickly reachable within an hour’s bus drive from Kathmandu. The duration is also confined to only 6 days with a gradual progressive pace, with sufficient opportunity to get acclimatized.
The daily elevation shifts also do not go over 1000 m, and the walking trails are also easy to navigate, consisting of manageable ridges and forest trails en route.
No technical knowledge, no skill, and no sacrificing your comforts and health. This trekking journey will, in fact, help you enjoy the untouched nature in complete peace of mind and tranquility with very few risks of acute mountain sickness, accidents, and injuries.
If you are a newcomer and looking to get a taste of the mountain adventure in Nepal, then the Helambu trek should be your unmissable trip. Situated very adjacent to Kathmandu, this trek accommodates families with grandparents and children.
With the reconstruction efforts after 2015, the Helambu region has seen the establishment of several quality tea houses, enabling visitors to appreciate the mountainous scenery in comfort.
Additionally, the Helambu trekking trail runs through the very preserved natural landmark of the National Reserve of Langtang, rich in diverse wildlife.
Also, the local communities of the Hyolmos, Tamangs, and Sherpas offer the visitors a unique chance to see the extraordinary perspective of Tibetan Buddhism.
On the other hand, as you travel through Sundarijal and Chisapani, you will also meet the Newars, Chhetris, and Brahmins, where you can perceive the lively Hindu culture.
Thus, if you are looking for so not-so-extreme altitude trek in Nepal that fits within your limited time frame, then the Helambu trek will be an excellent choice for a memorable family holiday.
The elevation between 2500 m and 3500 m is a moderate mountain altitude, where the oxygen levels are, of course, lower than at sea level but not as extreme as in the high Himalayas.
On our Helambu trek 6 days journey, you will reach the peak altitude at Thadepati at 3650 m only for a day. The rest of the trekking days then occur below 2700 m, thus reducing the chances of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).
Visitors know AMS as altitude sickness, which can happen to anybody, no matter how fit or experienced they are in hiking adventures. It mainly depends on how well and quickly your body can adjust to the new altitude and how much time you have available for the adjustment during the trek.
Thankfully, our Helambu trek itinerary will give you plentiful chances for an easy-going walking at a very consistent pace. There will be no need to rush, as you can reach your overnight locations within 4 to 6 hours.
We suggest you take breaks whenever you feel strained and get as much sleep as you can to help with acclimatization. Still, some of you may go through sleeping trouble, irritability, nosebleeds, exhaustion, appetite loss, nausea, dizziness, and headaches.
If so, it is best to stop progressing, slow down, and spend an extra night where you are currently. If symptoms resist to disappear, you should decide to go down which our guide will help with.
For effortless travel and comfort, Diamox can aid you, but remember, you will need a doctor’s prescription. Although it is purchasable without a prescription, we suggest you not take it on your own will as it is a diuretic medicine which should be taken with care.
Also, make sure you hydrate your body with 3 to 4 liters of water, or any fluids such as broth, juice, soup, etc.
Of course Helambu trek is an easy option for you, but investing a month to prepare for the walking portion of the trek would be wise on your part.
The trail may be easy enough, but putting your body through 4 to 6 hours of strain without any prior preparation can make your experience quite tough and straining.
We thus advise you to simulate the hiking activities at your home so you can be fully prepared when actually on the journey. For the demanding trek ahead, improve your leg strength and go up stairs, which will prep you for the ascending and descending sections of your trip.
Walk, jog, or run along the flat terrain first, then progress to hilly terrain. Also, remember that trekking will put immense pressure on your heart and lungs, too.
Therefore, engage in treadmill workouts, swimming, or cycling to strengthen these vital organs. You can also participate in sports of your liking.
For boosting our fitness and endurance, choose to do planks and squats. Set to do three sets of 30-second planks and ten squats every day. Additionally, watch videos that offer you real-time information about the Helambu region, its terrain, climate, and living conditions.
Seek practical advice from those who have already journeyed to Nepal.
The Helambu trek itinerary that we have outlined here is the standard route fit for all types of visitors. However, for an adventurous experience, you can also start your Helambu trek through Ganja La Pass (5121 m).
This two-week journey will be more perfect for fit individuals who have also done some high-altitude trekking previously. First, you will meander through the route of the Langtang Valley hamlets such as Lama Hotel, Langtang Village, and Kyanjin Gompa.
Then, overcoming the barrier of the Ganja La Pass, you will walk through the Helambu region. Another extension that you can possibly make is to go for a trekking expedition to Gosaikunda Lake.
This alpine lake will be reached after you detour the Langtang Valley and cross the Laurebina Pass (4600 m). Gosaikunda Himalayan Lake will greet you, after which you will travel down to the Helambu region.
If you are pressed for time, then add one more day at Tarke Ghyang and hike ahead towards Ama Yangri Peak (3,771 m). This pious Buddhist peak is said to bestow your wish once you stand on its top.
Sherpa Discovery Trek will attend to your sleeping place, your food options, and your travel mode during the Helambu trek, 6 days journey. We have organized your sleeping when trekking in the delightful best offered mountain tea houses en route.
With the reconstruction of the entire region after the 2015 Earthquake, the newly built tea houses are now more clean, equipped, and spacious. A double room with 2 large single beds will generally be offered with some necessary furnishings.
Having your own sleeping bag is best if you are walking in winter to avoid the bitter cold. We can’t promise you a separate or private shower and bathroom, but our team will see to it that you are comfortably accommodated.
WiFi, electricity, and power outlets for charging, along with hot water, will be available if you request the tea house owner, but at a small fee.
The onboard meals, three times each day, at these tea houses will also be arranged for you. The food choices will depend on the menu of the tea houses, but you will definitely get Dal Vat, Tsampa, Momos, Thukpa, and egg dishes.
As for your traveling arrangements, an exciting local bus adventure awaits you for your journey between Kathmandu and Sundarijal, and Melamchi Bazaar to Kathmandu.
Your hotel transfers in Kathmandu will also be looked after. Private transport can be arranged for a small fee.
While most of the hiking routes in Nepal require one national park permit, our Helambu trek needs permits for the two national parks: one for Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park and the other for the Langtang National Park.
The national park permits can be arranged straight at the respective entrance gates or at the Tourism Board office in the capital. The Shivapuri Park permit costs 1000 Nepali Rupees per visitor, while the Langtang Park needs 3000 Nepali Rupees for each visitor.
While some information online suggests the TIMS (Trekkers Information Management System) Card will not be needed for the Helambu trek but keep in mind that TIMS is also compulsory.
At 2000 Nepali Rupees, TIMS will be given to a visitor who registers each traveler’s traveling plan, routes, and contact information. We will be seeing all the administrative details and the cost of the permit.
The Helambu trek will not take you to the extreme Himalayan altitude of Nepal, but it will still lead you to 3650 m height through the changing mountain trails.
The risks of falling or any other types of accidents or injuries may be less in this trek, but not completely eliminated. So, travel insurance is a necessity for the Helambu trek, which has also been made mandatory by the Nepal government for every trekking trip in Nepal.
And keep in mind that travel insurance for trekking in Nepal is not the same as your regular insurance policy. It should look after your welfare, rescue, and well-being to the highest altitude of the trek, which in the case of our Helambu trek is 3650 m.
So it will be wise if you specify the maximum altitude coverage in your policy to be 3700 m. If you already have medical coverage, ensure it is also applicable in Nepal, which can relieve you from financial stress in case of hospitalization and settle your medical bills.
If you add some more additional coverage, such as postponement or cancellation of your trip, your international flight delays or cancellation, a few more days in Nepal, and a refund for your lost or damaged baggage and gear, it will be more helpful for you to have a peaceful journey.
Sure, you can take a jeep drive straight from Tarke Ghyang to Kathmandu, which can make this trip duration of only 4 days. Another short way out would be to drive straight from Kathmandu to Kutumsang and engage in only two days trek. If you desire a full-fledged hiking experience, then each day walking travel can be increased to 7 to 8 hours, so the entire trip can be completed within a short time frame.
No, not many tourists still know about the Helambu trek as other routes in Nepal. However, it has been gradually gaining its name, so it is better to hurry when it is still less trafficked.
Like any other two or three-week hiking journey in Nepal, the Helambu trek also gives you the much-loved Himalayan views along with the splendid nature and cultural immersion. The main benefit is that you can get all these experiences within less than a week and in a much more comfortable way.
Without a doubt! Not only parents but also your children can successfully complete our Helambu trek itinerary provided they are able to walk for a minimum of 5 hours with a momentary and frequent pause of course.
Certainly, since the Namaste network has a higher reach to high-elevation areas than NCELL, we suggest you get an NTC SIM card.
