Detail Itinerary of Nagarkot Sunrise Hike

Our day begins very early with a hotel pickup in Kathmandu (around 4:00–5:00 AM). We will drive roughly 1.5–2 hours east toward Nagarkot, winding through pine forests and rural villages. The fresh morning air and rising light set the scene for an beautiful Nagarkot Sunrise Hike. Upon arriving at Nagarkot View Tower (altitude 2,175 m), we walk to the lookout in time for sunrise.

As the sun peeks over the mountains, the sky turns pink and gold. On a clear morning you may spot world famous peaks such as Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and Gaurishankar (or Dorje Lakpa) in front; Manaslu on very clear days, and a faint glimpse of Everest in the far distance. This is a perfect spot for panoramic photos. After sunrise, we sit down for a nutritious breakfast at a local restaurant or hotel in Nagarkot. Enjoy a mix of Nepali dishes (such as sel roti, eggs, tea and fruit) while taking in the misty mountain and valley views. We will then go for a scenic downhill hike.

The trail heads south from Nagarkot into a valley of rhododendron and pine forests. The path leads through traditional villages like Telkot. Along the way, you will see friendly locals tending fields or walking to school. It is a cultural and scenic Nagarkot hiking experience due to the rural scenes: women in colorful dress, farmers at work, children smiling as you pass.

Later in the day, we arrive at the historical place of Changu Narayan Temple. This temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Nepal (UNESCO World Heritage Site), which is a 4th-century pagoda-style temple devoted to Lord Vishnu. Look at its carved wood doors, stone columns and old gods. It is also a very interesting place to stop and rest as the cultural meaning of the temple and its arts is very interesting and the drop of tranquility offered by the courtyard.

We then have a full lunch at the temple or a local cafe after visiting the temple and getting to know more about the history of the temple. About midday, our guide takes us back to the road.

Lastly, we take our own vehicle back to Kathmandu with a 1.5-2 hour ride. The path goes round Kathmandu Valley, and along the way, one can see beautiful villages and rice terraces. By mid-afternoon you reach Kathmandu (typically between 3:00 and 4:00 PM) and the tour ends with a drop-off at your hotel.

The sunset generally sets between 05:10-06:55 AM in different months. This wraps up a memorable day of hiking through the foothills, watching the sunrise, and discovering village life on the Nagarkot Sunrise Hike.

Trip Information

Trek Difficulty & Fitness Tips

The Nagarkot Sunrise Hike is an easy to moderate walk, mostly downhill from Nagarkot (2,175 m) to Changu Narayan (1,500 m). The path is easy to follow and can be taken by beginners, families, and older travelers with average fitness. This will be approximately 4-5 hours of easy walking with scenic views.

The trail is generally clear, though a few sections are uneven, so it’s best to wear sturdy hiking shoes or comfortable sneakers with good grip. Carry a light daypack and include water, snacks and additional layers.

Practice a bit of short and uphill walking or climbs up the stairs prior to the journey to strengthen the legs. Have a small backpack that contains necessities such as a camera and rain jacket. Rest when necessary and keep well hydrated. Our guides can slow down or speed up the group, so the hike can be comfortable to all active travelers of any age.

Altitude Strategy & Acclimatization

The peak of Nagarkot is 2,175 m so chances of altitude sickness are very minimal. Nevertheless, at least one night stay in Kathmandu (1,400 m) is recommended before the hike to ensure you are rested to start early. Consume as much water as possible, take short stops and enjoy the downhill trail which is mostly downhill and at a slow pace.

If you’re not used to hills, take extra time during stops and breathe steadily. In Kathmandu, you can also do a short city walk the day before for light acclimatization. Stay warm at the Nagarkot viewpoint after sunrise to avoid chills. Although the altitude is moderate, it’s wise to stay aware and listen to your body.

Altitude Sickness

The highest point of this hike is Nagarkot’s view tower at 2,175 m. Altitude sickness is rare below 2,500 m, so most hikers will not experience serious symptoms on the Nagarkot Sunrise Hike. However, if you arrive in Nepal very recently, mild symptoms like headache or shortness of breath can occur in the morning. To prevent discomfort: acclimatize for a night or two in Kathmandu, drink plenty of water, and avoid alcohol the night before.

If you have headache or nausea on the hill, notify your guide. We can slow down, rest, and provide fluids. In most cases the symptoms subsides quickly as you descend. Carrying a basic first-aid kit (aspirin, electrolyte powder) is useful. Because this trek loses altitude after the viewpoint, descending will naturally relieve any mild symptoms. Altogether, being hydrated and walking in slow pace will ensure that the Nagarkot hiking experience is not affected by the altitude.

Permit & Cost

For Nagarkot Sunrise Hike alone, no special trekking permit is needed. The path is not located in national parks or limited areas. You only need your passport and Nepal visa (see Visa section). Entry fees are minimal: Changu Narayan Temple charges a small entry fee (about NPR 300 for foreigners, roughly US$2–3) but this is usually covered by the tour package. Breakfast at Nagarkot is included; any additional snacks, drinks or souvenirs are extra.

Sherpa Discovery Treks’ package typically includes all transportation, breakfast and lunch, guide services and temple donations. You should budget a little extra cash for personal snacks (cold drinks/tea breaks on route), tips for the guide or driver (optional but appreciated), and any souvenirs. Local vendors at Nagarkot sell tea, coffee or energy drinks if you want extras. Overall, apart from optional personal expenses, there are no other permit fees for this day hike.

Best Time to Do This Trip

The Nagarkot Sunrise Hike is best done in clear seasons when mountain views are assured. Late autumn (mid-September to November) and spring (March to May) offer the most stable weather. The skies tend to be clear and air is crisp during these months and sunrises are amazing and panoramic views are wonderful.

Winter (December to February) can also be a good option for fewer crowds and very clear air, but mornings are colder (as low as 0–5°C). Monsoon season (June–August) is not recommended: heavy rains often mean foggy trails and cloudy skies, obscuring the view. Avoid booking during heavy rains. In short, plan for autumn and spring for the most reliable Nagarkot hiking conditions; It can be done in winter, if you have warm gear, and summer monsoons usually bring clouds.

Alternative Trekking Routes

If you enjoy the Nagarkot sunrise, Nepal offers other similar day hikes and treks. A popular one is the Chisapani-Nagarkot Trek (typically 2 days), which ascends to Nagarkot from the northwest via dense forests and terraced fields. This route offers the same Nagarkot view but adds an overnight in Chisapani (alt. 2,260 m) for an extended experience. Another option is the Dhulikhel-Changu Narayan Trek (1–2 days), which starts from the east of Kathmandu and also covers Changu Narayan temple and Nagarkot.

For a shorter alternative, some travelers combine Nagarkot with Bhaktapur Sightseeing in one day (a loop via Changu Narayan). Or try Namobuddha hike (a different sunrise viewpoint with monastery). Our guides can customize based on your interest. But for most visitors, the direct Nagarkot sunrise hike with Changu Narayan is perfect as a standalone trip or on a busy schedule.

Health and Travel Insurance

We highly recommend that every hiker should have extensive travel and health insurance coverage of trekking activities. In Nepal, several travel insurance plans are available that cover helicopter evacuation, emergency medical treatment, and trip cancellations. Although Nagarkot trail is safe and is at low altitude, unforeseen injuries (slips, sprains) or illness can occur anywhere.

Make sure that your insurance policy includes trekking and emergency medical facilities (you do not need high-altitude cover in this trip). Have contact information and policy number at hand. In case you have any underlying conditions (heart, asthma), you should visit your doctor before traveling. Our guide will bring a simple first aid kit of bandages, painkiller. If you are taking some personal medication, bring that as well. Overall, travel insurance is a relief because you will have nothing to worry about and can enjoy the sunrise view.

Transportation

This is a day trip from Kathmandu with all transportation provided. We use a private air-conditioned car or van for the journey. Your guide or driver will pick you up at your Kathmandu hotel early morning (around 4–5 AM). We then drive east to Nagarkot (approximately 1.5–2 hours along winding but well-maintained roads). The road itself offers glimpses of Kathmandu Valley’s rural outskirts.

After Nagarkot, the return trip begins from the temple area in the afternoon and takes about 1.5–2 hours back to Kathmandu, arriving in early evening. Both journeys are by private vehicle, so you can relax or nap after the hike. Note that road traffic in Kathmandu can be heavy, so start times may adjust slightly for early morning traffic or weather. Drinking water is provided in the vehicle; hot drinks are available at local stops along the route.

Fitness and Preparation

A little preparation makes the hike more enjoyable. Do some regular walking, light stretching, or stair climbing beforehand to stay active. Dress in layers—mornings can be chilly while midday warms up. Bring a warm jacket, gloves, sunhat, sunscreen, and a light rain jacket. Carry at least one litre of water, a few snacks, and your camera to capture the views.

Wear layers because temperatures change quickly. Early morning in Kathmandu will feel chilly (10–12°C), Nagarkot sunrise might be cold (near freezing), and then hiking warms you up. Bring a warm jacket or fleece, a hat and gloves.

For the hike down, wear light hiking pants or shorts and breathable layers. Sturdy hiking boots or good running shoes with grip are a must. Sunglasses, sunhat, and sunscreen are important (sun can be strong above 2,000 m). Also pack a rain jacket in case of mountain drizzle.

Be ready for an early wake-up. Have your cameras charged with extra batteries. The key is to relax and enjoy the experience – the pace is gentle, and the route offers plenty of photo stops. No specialist gear is needed (no ropes, just comfortable walking gear).

Guide and Staff

For the Nagarkot Sunrise Hike, Sherpa Discovery Treks provides an experienced, English-speaking guide (and driver). Our guides are the locals who know a lot about the trail, mountains and villages. They have first-aid kits, road directions, and make sure the group is progressing in the right way.

Although it is easy to hike on your own, a cultural tour (such as Changu Narayan) is more significant with a guide who can tell the history of the temple and local myths. In this day out you do not need porters as you are carrying your daypack. The guide applies logistics (entrance fee, organization of meals).

Our team cares about your comfort: they will slow down the group, provide rest breaks, and ensure that everyone travels as a unit. Guides know basic English, and some other languages or dialects may be spoken depending on the necessity. In case you need special consideration (vegetarian diet, slow pace, etc.), tell us in advance and we will make it possible.

Is This Trip Beginner-Friendly?

Yes, the Nagarkot Sunrise Hike is beginner-friendly. The trail is well-trodden and not technically difficult. You don’t need prior trekking experience to enjoy it. There is no long uphill climb – most of the hiking is downhill on gentle slopes and small stone paths. For this reason, even younger children (over age 8 with a shorter itinerary) and older adults can participate, provided they have basic fitness.

We recommend this trip for first-time hikers who want a taste of Nepali hiking without the commitment of multiple days. You will spend minimal time at altitude and return to comfort by evening. Our guides will lead at a moderate pace with breaks, so if you have a normal activity level you will do fine. Always communicate with your guide if you need to slow down – they are used to pacing for families or mixed-ability groups.

Gadgets Charging and Internet

Nagarkot and Changu Narayan are sort of rural, so reliable electricity or internet along the trail is limited. Hotels and guesthouses in Nagarkot do have charging outlets (often at breakfast spot) and some Wi-Fi, but this is limited or patchy compared to cities. We recommend bringing a fully charged power bank for cameras and phones. You can charge gadgets in the hotel before hiking, but be aware power outages occasionally happen in mountain areas.

Mobile phone signal is spotty, in near villages you may get Nepal Telecom (NTC) or NCell coverage, but at the Nagarkot viewpoint early morning it can be low. Don’t rely on data service up there. When you require the connection, short signal tends to be common as you pass between villages. We recommend having roaming plans or obtaining a local SIM card in Kathmandu when necessary. In general, take this hike as a chance to unplug, enjoy the scenery, and bring extra batteries instead of assuming the presence of the internet.

Visa and Permit

All foreign visitors to Nepal (except Indians) require a tourist visa. You can obtain a Nepal visa on arrival at Tribhuvan Airport or land border. As of the latest notice, visas are typically US$30 (15 days), US$50 (30 days), and US$125 (90 days). Check the Department of Immigration for current rates. Bring passport photos or pay slightly extra for visa processing. Ensure your passport is valid for 6 months and has spare pages.

There is no special trekking permit needed for Nagarkot or Changu Narayan. These locations are in the populated Kathmandu Valley, outside national parks. You simply need your Nepal entry visa and a valid passport. The only fee is the small Changu Narayan Temple entry fee (about NPR 300; usually included). Always carry a photocopy or digital copy of your passport when hiking.

Your Extra Expenses

Other than the tour package price, you must budget a bit more to allow a few personal expenses. It is advisable to keep Nepali rupees in small notes. Cold drinks, tea or coffee are available when on the hike and they are about NPR 50 to 100 a cup. Nagarkot has small souvenirs like local handicrafts or postcards that you can buy should you be interested.

Tipping is optional, though welcome, with most of the travellers contributing almost 5 to 10 percent of the cost of the tour or approximately 5 to 10 US dollars each to the guide and the driver. In case you prefer to carry your own food like fruit or energy bars, then you can purchase them conveniently in Kathmandu. Changu Narayan Temple costs NPR 300 as the entry fee which is normally part of the package.

Certain public toilets will have low charges of NPR 10 to 20. Hotels usually have free electricity to charge your devices though you have to tip should someone help you. In general, you will have sufficient money to spend on yourself and tips throughout the day, totaling approximately 20-30 US dollars.

Photography Hotspots & Best Views

The Nagarkot Sunrise Hike is a photographer’s dream. The main photography highlight is the Nagarkot View Tower at sunrise: you get unobstructed 180° sunrise over snow-capped peaks. Prepare for golden and pink skies lighting up Langtang, Ganesh Himal, and Gaurishankar ranges – with Manaslu and a distant Everest sometimes visible on the clearest days. The combination of high hills and valleys means you also capture beautiful layers of forest and village rooftops from the viewpoint.

After sunrise, the downhill trail has many scenic stops: misty village fields, red and pink rhododendrons (in season), and terraced farmlands with mountain backdrops. These mid-hike scenes make great lifestyle shots. At Changu Narayan Temple, every corner is a photo opportunity: detailed wood carvings, ancient stone idols, and the golden sunset if timed right. The temple complex’s history and artistry are best captured in bright daylight.

Throughout the hike, expect to photograph local people in traditional dress, prayer flags fluttering, and the meandering trail itself. Don’t forget wide-angle shots of the valley as you descend. For the best views, use the tower at Nagarkot for sunrise, and the open fields near Nagarkot for sunset colors if you happen to linger (though most tours leave post-sunrise). In summary, carry extra batteries and memory cards – you’ll find plenty of stunning Nagarkot hiking vistas and cultural moments to capture.
