Talk to trip expertThe Tamang heritage trek is a well-balanced journey that combines the exciting mountain adventure with the rich and lively culture of the Tamang people. Since its inception from 2004, the Langtang Tamang Heritage trek today stands out as one of the most authentic journey in the Himalayas of Nepal.
Even after 21 years, the Tamang heritage trekking trail still remains unique as few Tamangs have encountered tourists allowing them to retain their culture still untouched and unspoiled.
Our very easy and comfortable Tamang Heritage trek 8 days journey will take you to the stunningly charming traditional mountain settlements lying between the majestic Langtang and Ganesh Peaks in the Rauswa district of Nepal just 30 km farther from Kathmandu.
The route will guide you to the protected territory of the Langtang National Park home to red panda, langur monkeys, snow leopard and musk deer.
But the major experience of the Tamang heritage trek is the people of the Tamang community who are native residence to the Himalayas of Nepal. They are proud of their rich heritage that connect them to Mongolia and Tibet.
Their one of a kind customs, language, tradition, culture and religious faiths are complemented by their art that echo the time honored Tibetan style.
Most Tamangs practice Nyingma, the oldest in Tibetan Buddhism and have a deep love for music especially the Damphu Drum. Currently, they are mostly involved in agriculture, animal husbandry, and commerce with Tibet.
The expedition of Tamang Heritage trekking trail starts with an early drive to Gatlang from Kathmandu via Syabrubesi. You will then begin walking pleasantly through the magnificent Tamang localities enjoying the mountain panoramic views of Ganesh (7422 m), Langtang Lirung (7234 m), Manaslu (8163 m), Sanjen (6550 m), Annapurna (8091 m) and numerous other Tibetan peaks.
Once in Tatopani, you will be able to soothe your weary bodies in the relaxing hot water of Tatopani Spring. You will then continue your adventure through Nagthali and Timure to ascend to the final stretch of the Nepalese border at Rasuwagadhi, where you can explore the ruins of the ancient local fortress.
Then walking back through Briddhim and admiring its Dukchu Gompa architecture, you will conclude your Tamang heritage trek with a long drive from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu.
A very relatively easy journey, our Tamang Heritage trek is very suitable for families, children, nature and cultural lovers making it an ideal experience in any season of Nepal.
Today, we will initiate our steps to the Tamang Heritage trek with a long but beautiful road journey to Gatlang. From Kathmandu, our journey directs us northwest along the rural hills and mountain settlements of Trishuli on the Pasang Lhamu Highway.
The drive will continue to push us through Betrawati and Dhunche. The terrain and views start to transform as we march onward towards Syabrubesi.
The road now steeply goes up through the Goljang Village. Open your windows and peek at the impressive features of the Langtang Lirung, Shishapangma, Ganesh, and Jugal Himal.
Gradually, on the horizon, the small Tamang houses of the Gatlang hamlet begin to appear before our eyes. As we step inside, the lovely Tamang people will greet us with Khada (white colored scarf).
In the evening, the traditional songs, music, and dance will just capture our senses.
An easy and calm walk will advance us onward through the magnetic old stupas towards Thangbuchet. A very important Chilime Village is not far from here gracefully positioned beside the Bhote Koshi River.
A solidly hung bridge will take us across this massive river. As we continue, we will see the Chilime Hydropower dam on the way. We will then journey through the Gonggang village and then climb through the green hills to reach Tatopani.
After settling in our lodge rooms, we will go on to immerse ourselves in the revitalizing natural hot springs- a warming relief for our weary feet and back.
Today we will achieve the highest elevation of our Tamang heritage trek 8 days journey. Gently walking through the hilly forest, we will first reach the Tibetan Tamang hamlet called Brimdang.
Then a moderate ascending trail will lead us over the Nagthali Danda/Ridge. A momentary stop here will award us with the mesmerizing silhouettes of Sanjen, Ganesh, and Langtang Peaks.
We can also find a very attractive small monastery here where the Lamas will be happy to serve us a warm cup of tea.
From Nagthali, we will move down calmly through the enchanting forest to Thuman. It is also a pleasant Tamang Village rich in Tibetan culture where the warm-hearted residents delight in song and dance.
From Thuman, we will walk above the ridge to the northeast and make a steep descent of around 600 m to Dalphedi. Another air-suspended bridge will move us across the Bhote Koshi after which we will continue to climb up along the newly established road for around 40 minutes to reach Timure.
It is a very important town located just a stone’s throw from the Tibetan border and serves as the main entrance gate to the Kailash tour.
Today, we plan to see the admirable terrain of Tibet from the Nepal border. We will set on from Timure towards Ghatte Khola and take a momentary break to see the incredible sights of Annapurna, Langtang, Manaslu, and Ganesh peaks.
We will move up further for a while eventually stepping at the Rasuwagadhi border, where we can appreciate the legendary ruins of its fort and the expansive Tibetan high plateaus.
After this magnificent experience, we will move our feet back to Timure for our overnight sleep.
From Timure, we will move on along the path upstream of Bhote Koshi River for around three hours to reach the Lingling Village. A gentle uprising path of about two hours will then take us to the Briddhim Village nestled in the heart of Langtang Valley.
The village is home to the amazing Dukchu Gompa which was once selected by Guru Rinpoche as the pious Buddhist site. After briefly walking through the monastery, we will privilege ourselves by residing in the home of the locals to experience the firsthand hospitality of the lovely Tamangs.
From Briddhim, our trail will gracefully go down through the dense rhododendron woods along the edge of the Bhote Koshi River. We will then venture north and arrive at Syabrubesi.
This village will offer us one more incredible chance to feel the Himalayan aura of Ganesh, Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu.
Taking a final look at the magnificent green hills and white peaks, we will now travel back to Kathmandu. The rugged road will lead us through Betrawati from where the main road of the Pasang Lhamu Highway will take us back to Kathmandu through Trishuli.
Once we are in the capital, we will take you back to your lodging so you can unwind and look back at your travel days during the Tamang Heritage trek.
Although perfect in any weather condition, the perfect opening for the Tamang Heritage trek occurs in the autumn or the fall months of September, October, and November.
The monsoon rain cleanses the sky, the atmosphere is refreshing, and the forest still retains its vibrant greenery. Most of all, the Himalayas show their exclusive transparent profiles and the climate is also temperate.
The second opening happens in the spring months of March, April, and May when the woods in the trail take on the rhododendron hue with air mixed with the incredible fragrance.
The winter months of December, January, and February feature brisk mornings and nights but the days remain brightest and warm. The possibility of snow over the Nagthali Danda however cannot be denied.
The summer and monsoon months of June, July, and August pour the heavy rain turning the easy trail into water-covered rivers. In the absence of rain, the thermometer often rises to 35 degrees Celsius making the day walking a difficult task.
Our Tamang Heritage trekking trail is an easy level 1 hiking adventure reaching the maximum altitude of only 3165 m at Nagthali Danda. This 53 km long journey offers a relatively gentle experience immersing you in the incredible nature of Langtang National Park and the rich culture of the Tamang people.
Each day, you will walk an average of no more than 10 km for about 4 to 5 hours a day. The altitude gain will also be under 500 m most of the time making this mountain adventure the most accessible one in Nepal.
However, there will be some moderately steep and rocky sections, especially on the day when you need to ascend to Nagthali Danda. If you are very new to the elevation of 3000 m or above and are not comfortable with the steep climbs and descent, the journey can be a bit tougher.
We Sherpa Discovery Trek team wish to make your every trip in Nepal easy and comfortable. The Tamang Heritage trek is also not an exception so we have incorporated the slow ascents, short walking hours, and sufficient time for adaptation.
When we compare other mountain trekking trips in Nepal, the Tamang Heritage trek 8 days seems a relatively easy and comfortable hiking adventure with the reward of the gorgeous Himalayas and the remarkable culture.
The altitude throughout the trek also remains below 3500 m making this an attractive choice for those who are going into the mountains for the first time and those who do have not much athletic prowess.
Since the Tamang heritage trekking trail does not necessitate any technical caliber, this trip is an excellent choice for everyone: new hikers, families, young children, and seniors.
Since the adventure presents a wonderful chance to mingle with the Tamang people, along with the outstanding nature of Langtang, this trek is also an excellent trip for nature and cultural lovers.
Even if you have minor health concerns, you can still take part, as the trek lasts only a week and is situated near Kathmandu. However, if you are going through some major heart and lung complications, we request you to discuss this trek’s nature with our doctor and engage only after their approval.
Our Langtang Tamang heritage trek doesn’t involve any high altitude; the altitude it presents is of a moderate nature not rising above 3500 m. Still, we cannot completely deny the existence of AMS more generally known as altitude sickness.
It is because you will spend multiple nights on our Tamang Heritage trek 8 days journey at an elevation of 2500 m and more where normally oxygen concentration in the air is going to be low.
Another adding factor is the constant elevation increase as you proceed along the journey. On the second day, you will find yourself resting above 2500 m while on the third day, you will be above 3,000 m.
Therefore, it is normal to go through the occurrence of fatigue, vertigo, slight headache, nausea, and trouble in sleeping. These are all the minor signs of AMS which usually go on their own after an adequate amount of rest, sleep, and hydration.
Additionally, our guide will watch out for your condition and decide on whether to continue proceeding or take you to a lower elevation. For easiness during the journey, we have set aside a resting day and a very short acclimating walk in Timure.
For further physical easiness, you can also take Diamox under a doctor’s prescription.
You have already come to known all about the challenges of Tamang heritage trek. So to complete this trek without any hurdles, we suggest you to improve your physical and mental caliber through some training and workout routines.
At first, you can begin with simple common activities such as running, walking, swimming, cycling, and jogging. Then, you can go on some medium hiking trips with light backpack weighing around 15 kg.
For the climbing part of the Nagthali Danda, we advise you to ascend and descend the stairs of your building. You should also add deep breathing exercises to help you with the acclimatization process on the trip.
Afterward, you can then train on the uneven grounds of hills and smaller mountains to build the specific muscles required for hiking. As for the mental preparedness, get to know about the Tamang Heritage trekking trail and its surroundings.
Prepare yourself for a week away from your home comfort and also for the home stay in the residence of the lively Tamang people.
We will manage each detail of your Tamang heritage trek from your place of stay, meals to the way you will travel. You will stay in the finest available mountain tea houses where comfortable basic furnished room will be available with two or occasionally three single beds.

The tea houses may lack the wide diverse menu but we suggest you to try Thukpa, Tsampa, and momo along with locally made raksi or chhyang.
We will also take care of your airport and hotel transfers via private transport, and provide bus services from Kathmandu to Gatlang and back from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu. For an added fee, you can also use the convenience of local shared or private jeep options.
The Tamang heritage trekking trail runs through the magnificent landmark of the Langtang National Park. So to walk into this untouched area, we need a National Park permit which is available at nominal fee of 3000 NPR (US Dollars 26 or 27) for each person.
For the safety of each tourist in the area, the TIMS (Trekker’s Information Management System) permit has also been made mandatory costing only 2000 NPR (US Dollars 15 to 16) for each trekker.
The TIMS permit is secured through the tourism office in Kathmandu while the Langtang park permit is also available in Dhunche. Since we offer you an all inclusive service, the permit arrangements and fees will also be taken care of for you.
